Short answer: Cold storage holds your stock. Cold transport moves it. A 3PL runs both for you, plus order handling. If you already have a cold room and just need goods delivered, you need cold transport, nothing more. Cold storage vs cold transport vs 3PL is the first thing most Dubai food businesses get confused about, mostly because every provider’s website offers all three and calls them by the same name. So skip the definitions for a moment and answer one question.
The one-question test: where does your stock sleep tonight?
- In your own walk-in chiller or freezer: you need cold transport. Someone has to bring stock in, or take it out to customers.
- Nowhere yet, because it arrives in bulk and sells over weeks: you need cold storage first, then transport.
- You don’t want to handle any of it, including packing orders: that is the 3PL case.
Most restaurants, caterers and small food suppliers in Dubai land in the first group. Many of them are sold storage and 3PL contracts they never needed.
Cold storage: you are paying for space, power and handling
Cold storage is a facility that keeps goods at a fixed temperature until you need them. Frozen zones are normally held at -18°C or below. Chilled zones usually sit between +2°C and +8°C. Facilities are concentrated around Ras Al Khor, Al Quoz, Dubai Investment Park, Jebel Ali and Dubai Logistics City, close to ports and main roads.
What matters is how it is priced. Quotes come per pallet, per square foot, per cubic metre or per container, and the base rate is rarely the full cost. Before you compare two cold stores, ask each one for the same four items:
- Storage rate and minimum term
- Handling charge for goods in
- Handling charge for goods out
- Any power, admin or after-hours charges
A cheap base rate with high handling fees costs more than it looks if your stock moves in and out every few days.
Cold transport: you are paying for a route, not a truck
Cold transport moves goods in a chiller van, freezer truck or refrigerated truck. It does not store anything or manage your inventory, Haulier Transport dubai.
A transport quote is built from five things: the vehicle, the distance, the number of stops, the delivery window and whether the job repeats. A single drop in Al Quoz and a morning route through five restaurants in Deira are completely different jobs, even if the cargo weight is the same. That is why a good provider asks about your route before quoting a vehicle.
Frozen cargo should travel at -18°C or below, which is the Dubai Municipality position on frozen food. Chilled food is commonly kept at around 0°C to 5°C, and some products allow up to 8°C. Check the product label and the current Dubai Municipality requirement for your category.
If this is the part you need, our team plans cold chain logistics in Dubai deliveries around your cargo, route and delivery window.
3PL: one contract, several jobs
A third-party logistics company takes over a bundle of tasks. In cold chain, that usually means storage, inventory control, picking and packing, and delivery. Some own their cold stores and vehicles. Others coordinate partners and manage the process.
It makes sense when you sell many small orders from stored stock, such as an online frozen food brand, or when you have large, changing inventory and no wish to run a warehouse. It makes less sense when you already own the storage and only need deliveries. You would be paying for services you already have.
The side-by-side of Cold Storage vs Cold Transport vs 3PL
| Cold storage | Cold transport | Cold chain 3PL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does | Holds goods cold | Moves goods cold | Stores, handles and delivers |
| Priced by | Pallet, sq ft or container, plus handling | Vehicle, route, stops, time | Bundled or per service |
| Commitment | Often a minimum term | One-time or recurring | Usually longer |
| Fits | Importers, distributors | Restaurants, caterers, suppliers, retailers | Online brands, complex inventory |
What fits your business
- Restaurant or cloud kitchen with its own cold room: cold transport.
- Caterer working to event dates: cold transport timed to the event. See our event and catering logistics support.
- Food supplier serving several restaurants: cold transport on multi-stop routes. Add storage only if you hold stock for long.
- Importer receiving full containers: cold storage, then transport out to customers.
- Supermarket or retail supplier: storage at your end, scheduled cold transport to stores.
- Online seller of frozen or chilled goods: most likely a 3PL.
- Pharmaceuticals and vaccines: a regulated category with its own documentation rules. Use a provider set up for it.
Where cold chains actually break: the handover
Most advice talks about the truck. In practice, a lot of damage happens in the gap between cold room and vehicle.
When goods leave a cold store, they stand on a dock in Dubai heat, waiting for a truck that may not be ready. Nobody is clearly responsible for the temperature during that gap. If you use separate providers for storage and transport, fix this on paper before the first job:
- The cold store stages the goods before the truck arrives.
- The truck arrives pre-cooled, not cooled after loading.
- Loading is done quickly, ideally outside the hottest part of the day.
- Temperature is recorded at pickup and again at delivery.
Using two providers is perfectly fine and often cheaper than a bundled deal. It only fails when nobody owns the handover.
Five questions that expose a weak provider
- What temperature will my cargo be held at, and how do I see proof?
- Is the vehicle pre-cooled before loading?
- Can you work to fixed receiving windows and multiple stops?
- What happens if the unit fails mid-route?
- What is charged on top of the base rate?
A provider who says “we do everything” but cannot answer these clearly is selling a brochure, not a service.
What to send for a cold transport quote
Product type, chilled or frozen, rough quantity, required temperature if you have one, pickup point, delivery points, preferred times, and whether it is one-off or recurring.

FAQ
What is the difference between cold storage and cold transport?
Cold storage keeps goods at a set temperature while they wait. Cold transport keeps them at temperature while they move.
Is a 3PL the same as cold storage?
No. Cold storage is only the space. A 3PL may include storage but also handles inventory, order packing and delivery.
Do I need a 3PL for cold chain in Dubai?
Only if you want one company to run storage, orders and delivery. If you have your own cold room, cold transport is usually enough.
What temperature must frozen food travel at in Dubai?
-18°C or below. Chilled food is commonly around 0°C to 5°C, with some products allowing up to 8°C. Follow the label and current Dubai Municipality rules.
Can I use one company for storage and another for transport?
Yes. Agree the handover in advance: staged goods, a pre-cooled truck and a temperature record at pickup and delivery.
Is refrigerated transport enough for a restaurant?
Yes, if the restaurant has its own walk-in chiller or freezer.
Conclusion
Work out where your stock sleeps, and the choice mostly makes itself. For many Dubai restaurants, caterers and suppliers, what is missing is not storage or a 3PL, it is dependable cold delivery.
